Cenote Maya is only accessible through a private guided tour. This tour through Alltournative was strongly recommended to us by a local in Playa del Carmen and we were so glad that we took his advice. The tour begins with a visit to the magnificent archaeological site of Ek Balam and ends with lunch and a refreshing cool off at the Cenote Maya.
The tour gives you two options for entering the cenote: rappelling or taking the staircase. I was the lucky one that got to rappel in and splash down in the water while my husband walked the kids down the stairs which led to a platform deck. Although there are no fish to look at, it was definitely worth bringing along a snorkel and mask because the depth of the cenote and the clarity of the water were amazing. I highly recommend this tour!
