Akumal, Quintana Roo
Mexico

Akumal means "place of the turtles" in the Mayan language. Green and Loggerhead sea turtles travel hundreds of miles year after year to return here for laying their eggs on the soft, white, sandy beaches. Nesting season  begins in May and lasts through October. Take care when walking on the beach to avoid stepping on nest mounds or anywhere that you see sticks pushed into the ground as markers. Do not shine your flashlight at turtles when walking at night. When encountering these giant turtles in the bay, do not approach, touch, harass, ride , or feed them. Local amenities include: hotels, private lodgings, grocery stores, gift shops, restaurants, beach bars, dive companies, snorkel tours, fishing, and boating tours. Exit at "Akumal Exit" from the main highway.

We got to Akumal bay from our hotel, the Barcelo Maya, by a taxi van. There was a large group of us. at the bay we rented a glass bottom boat for 10 USD per person. the boat took us to the reef an snorkeling area which was 100 yards from the beach.

we took our kids so they could check out the fish from the boat while my wife and I took turns snorkeling.

There were some really large Green sea Turtles, Akumal means the place of the turtles. We got some great pics. My wife saw a huge bat ray.

The condition of the coral was degraded, there were dead coral patches amongst living ones.

It was still an awesome pace to see green sea turtles.

If you are there you should check out the Centro Ecologico Akumal. it is turtle conversation group. they have a building there with information and you can also buys T-shirts. The proceeds go to their cause.
